Inclusion @ Chilwell PS
A Whole School Approach to Inclusion at Chilwell Primary School
Chilwell Primary School is an inclusive school. We strive to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment where all members of our school community are welcomed and treated with respect.
Virginnia Gilham is our Inclusive Practices Leader at Chilwell Primary School. She works alongside our Assistant Principal, Sarah Jeffreys, and Chilwell staff to implement inclusive practices across the school.
At Chilwell Primary School, we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate all students, including those with a disability. A reasonable adjustment is a measure or action taken to assist students with a disability to participate in their education on the same basis as their peers. Adjustments in the classroom help all students learn.
Adjustments are helpful for all, harmful for none and crucial for some.
As part of our work in Inclusion, staff developed our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to reflect on how support works for all students at Chilwell Primary School. Within these systems of support, there are three levels.
Tier 3 refers to intensive supports
Tier 2 strategies are targeted group strategies that are used to support groups of students.
Tier 1 strategies are universal strategies that we use to support all students. These are part of our core teaching.
Inclusion at Chilwell:
- Promoting a whole school approach to Inclusion for staff, students and families.
- Embedding inclusion within the curriculum.
- Acknowledge and respond to the diverse needs, identities, and strengths of all students.
- Continuously developing our knowledge of neurodiversity and supports that can be put in place to support all students.
- Ensuring clear referral pathways within our school.
- Building inclusive practices with input from internal and external allied health.
At Chilwell Primary School, we actively nurture and promote an inclusive culture where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
